The Statue of Liberty was a gift from the nation of France to the United States of America in 1885.

The statue was constructed of an iron skeleton and copper skin. Over time, the copper metal had a series of chemical reactions. The colors below show its evolution as the copper reacted with molecules in the atmosphere.
